Building an Executive Dashboard in Excel 2007 with Conditional Formatting
Latest News in Excel Dashboards: New functionality for Excel based Enterprise Dashboards.
One of the truly exciting improvements in Excel 2007 for us avid enterprise dashboard project team members is the extent of the conditional formatting of the cells. Depending on logic related to the value of the contents of the cell, you can assign colors (think heat map visualizations) or icons (think red/green visual KPI indicators).
Here are a couple of excel 2007 demo videos that give a glimpse of the new features that you will definitely be using when building an executive dashboard.
This first video has no sound so think of it as an early silent movie about business intelligence visualization! Watch the cells as the person quickly drops down the conditional formatting options.
This next one does have sound. You may want to skip straight to the latter part on the formatting options.
And here is a quick tour of some new Excel 2007 features. This guy blows through 5 new features in 30 seconds!

A very useful extension for Excel dashboards is MicroCharts. It provides cell-sized charts
