Topic: Reading Program Metrics Tracking Dashboards

Executive Dashboards are now appearing regularly in the education sector as aids in various education, management and administrative efforts. Today on the Dashboard Spy we look at a Reading Program Dashboard.

At-a-glance, educators can track the progress of their reading programs at the district, school and student levels. In fact, the vendor of the dashboard software powering this dashboard advertises on their website that you can access the results of 100,000 reading quizzes.

Here is the screenshot of the dashboard:

As you see, this is the dashboard view for the school district administrator. There are several dashboard portlets. In the main one in the middle of the dashboard, we have the Reading Summary composed of four panels of metrics. The Success Index shows in the last 30 days the percentage of students who averaged at least 85% on their quizzes. Note the cute color gauge - the outline of the student fills in with the green color.

The next student metric is Participation. That one shows how many students in the last 30 days took at least one quiz.

Engaged Time tracks for the school year to date the estimated average minutes spent on the reading activities and the stated target amounts.

The last KPI shows the number of books read and even the number of words read (are we getting to a ridiculous level of measurement here?). These metrics are based on Reading Practice Quizzes Passed.

In separate dashboard portlets are graphs of Reading Participation tracked by school grades. and Reading Totals in terms of books read at the district level.

On the right side is a very important graph - The Reading Success Index. It shows by grade the percentage of students scoring at least an 85% on their quiz grades.

All in all, a straight-forward dashboard for a business sector that certainly could use improved measurement techniques and performance dashboard tools.
