iDash PowerPoint Template for Dashboard Style Presentations
Dashboard Spy reader and seasoned IT consultant Pete Brown, who I’ve come to think of as “Dashboard Pete”, has provided us dashboarding enthusiasts with a powerful PowerPoint template to use when we want to structure a presentation in the dashboard style.
Recent posts have explored the growing use of dashboard-style navigation in PowerPoint. See Using PowerPoint as a Presentation Dashboard over on the main Dashboard Spy site. Also, we spoke recently of how many dashboards themselves rely on PowerPoint as a distribution method. See Project Status Dashboards in PowerPoint.
The iDash template (take a look below at the cell phone navigation gadget for the inspiration of the name) will allow you to easily navigate between sections of the presentation through the use of a small icon dashboard. Here is a screenshot:

Let’s take a look at the slide viewer to get a sense of the template:

You can see that the template contains the navigation panel on the right side, section cover pages and blank section pages. The idea is that the navigation dashboard is pre-wired for you to use. Simply insert your own content slides into each section, rename the sections and off you go.
You may notice that slides 2 and 3 contain some great stock icons for you to incorporate into your version of the presentation. Enjoy them!
Once you download the powerpoint template and have a look, you’ll see what I mean. Download the iDash template from the Dashboard Spy Template Collection where you can scroll down to the iDash template. Or, if you prefer, right click and “Save Target As” this link to the iDash Template.
As Dashboard Pete explains:
Here is a wee template I made up from graphic sources on the web to
assist in the self-drive navigation of the dashboards which I produce. As you can see it’s a mobile phone interface which is dropped onto the
master slide in the PPT, the slide numbers & time variables are added (why
can’t ppt update the time every minute or so?), and then I create
transparent boxes around the buttons which hyperlink to the specific
slide. Works pretty good. The arrows at the bottom go back or forward a
slide, and the MORE button advances to the next slide. Of course the
standard spacebar and arrow keys still work to drive around the slides.
Simple stuff. The objects can be ungrouped to reveal the components etc.Mapping:
- top right logo space for company logo, banner, etc
- below that the navigational instructions, introducing the concept of
using the phone buttons to navigate….. B-)
- the phone navigational tool
- the left 3/4 of the screen is the area where the graphics appear
according to which button is selected on the interface, i.e. Summary,
Email, Voice, Web, SATs, & “Norah” which could link to a portal. The
left/right arrows and MORE button work appropriately.
Dashboard Spies - I invite you to try out this new resource. Hope you like it and appreciate Pete Brown’s contribution to the dashboarding community. Thanks, Pete!
