Dashboards / Infographic Topic: Survey of Women’s 2010 New Year’s Resolution.
What new year’s resolutions did women make in 2010? This infographic reveals the results of a survey taken to find out.
Presented as a simple array of 3D pie charts and bar graphs, this pseudo “dashboard” presents some very interesting survey results. This is a good example of how the data itself can be downright fascinating in its own right.

The source is obviously tilted towards diet and exercise, so keep that in mind.
Some of the data points I found particularly interesting:
89% of women made resolutions while 11% didn’t.
When asked what they would NOT give up, 16% said chocolate while 8% said sex.
What is more important to you – $10k (89%) or 10 pounds of body weight (11%).
This fascinating infographic find came via Top Cultured’s Womens 2010 Resolutions post.
Happy New Year!

Dashboard Spy: Raw File Edition
Long time Dashboard Spy fans know that I can turn up some pretty amazing finds now and then. How would you like to see some internal dashboards that British Petroleum used to track their oil spill clean up activities?
Don’t have much to go on here except for some very interesting URLs from the United States House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary web server.
At this point, my guess is that the committee was examining BP’s handling of the crisis and asked to see internal documentation. This came in the form of PDF dashboards!
Take a look at this first one. Here is the link to the pdf file:

Here is the link to the previous day’s file. Note how the dashboard format is NOT used in that one. I wonder if this is the date where BP moved to a visual dashboard device for this report?

Here’s a screenshot of the Gulf of Mexico Incident Daily Dashboard from BP:

Interesting, no?

Dashboard Example: Real Time Energy Consumption Tracking Dashboard at University of California at San Diego.
This view of the University of California San Diego Energy Dashboard shows the total campus power consumption. This view is an aggregate of the last year’s energy use. Look how the campus shut down at Christmas!

The energy dashboard can even go down to the individual device level. View the dashboard at this link:
UC San Diego Energy Dashboard
The I.T. department at the university has saved quite a bit of electricity through the dashboard:
Using the energy dashboard, we have been able to identify the various opportunities to save energy across the UCSD campus. Our initial data, especially within the CSE building, shows that information technology (IT) equipment is one of the dominant energy comsumers in a modern mixed-use building.
Therefore, in our effort to reduce the energy footprint of IT infrastructure, several of our key research efforts focus on allowing computers (desktops and laptops) to employ low-power modes such as “sleep” more frequently. The key observation driving our research in this space is that computers are often in an idle state and are left on purely to support network-facing applications such as allowing remote access (RDP, SSH) or running download applications. Our solution to this issue is to augment computers such that they can maintain network presence and availability even in low-power “sleep” modes, thus resulting in significant energy savings
