Some fellow Dashboard Spies and I were discussing the rising popularity of Microsoft Sharepoint server for executive dashboard applications and the topic of conditional formatting and graphical red/green/yellow status indicators arose. Were dashboard traffic lights available in SharePoint right out-of-the-box?
We found this nice video demonstration of how to tweak the Sharepoint code so that you do get red/green/yellow lights on a simple list:

Great tutorial, but I have one problem with the result. In one of my columns, I’m using a person’s name, and even though I have the “presence indicator” turned off, once I make these changes in Sharepoint designer, the presence indicator shows back up. When it comes back, it’s on the right side of the name rather than the usual left…
This is a problem because it distracts from the status indicators that were my goal in the first place.
Any advice on how to remove these?

My method is easier and is entierely applied through the SharePoint UI (no FrontPage or SharePoint Designer).
The following article explains how to configure a Data View Web Part with conditional formatting to allow items in a SharePoint list to be formatted based on item-level meta data, such as the due date or priority of a Task Item. The example formats items in a task list so that overdue tasks are bold and red, tasks due in 3 days are formatted as orange, 1 week yellow and one month green.
